The Rockhampton Regional Council area takes in the city on both banks of the Fitzroy River, from the CBD and the northside suburbs out to Parkhurst and west to Gracemere. Auto electrical work here ranges from family cars and commuter utes to cattle trucks, rail and industrial fleets, and vehicles heading out on the Bruce and Capricorn Highways.

Suburbs in Rockhampton

Rockhampton sits just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Fitzroy River splits it in two. The CBD and older southside streets sit on the south bank, while most of the newer housing spreads north through Park Avenue, Frenchville and Norman Gardens to Parkhurst. Gracemere, west along the Capricorn Highway, is a fast-growing commuter town beside the region's big cattle saleyards. The Bruce Highway carries heavy freight straight through the city, so the work shifts from short-trip city cars to trucks, utes and rural vehicles within a few kilometres.

Common auto electrical jobs in Rockhampton

Long hot summers, floods on the Fitzroy and a strong beef and freight economy shape most of the auto electrical work around Rockhampton.

Batteries worn out by summer

Bureau of Meteorology records for Rockhampton Airport put the average December maximum above 32 degrees, and the heat under a bonnet is much higher than that. Heat speeds up the chemical wear inside a battery, so many batteries here fail sooner than drivers expect, and often without warning. A car that started fine after work can be dead the next morning. A load test at each service shows how much life is left. Our guide on how to test a car battery explains the readings.

Cattle trucks and freight

Rockhampton calls itself the Beef Capital of Australia, and the cattle trade keeps a lot of trucks on the road. Stock crates, trailers and prime movers travel between properties, the Gracemere saleyards and processing plants, while general freight rolls through on the Bruce Highway. Most heavy vehicles run 24V systems, and lighting faults, chafed looms and charging problems are common after long dusty runs. A walk-around check of every lamp and plug before departure catches most faults while they are still cheap to fix.

Flood and water damage

The Fitzroy River has a long flood history. It peaked at 9.2 metres in January 2011 and at about 8.9 metres in April 2017, after ex-tropical cyclone Debbie. Low-lying roads go under and vehicles parked in the wrong spot can take on water. Water in connectors, fuse boxes and control modules causes faults that can show up weeks later. If a car has been sitting in floodwater, don't try to start it. Have it checked first, and talk to your insurer.

Air conditioning that quits

Rockhampton summers are long, humid and hot, so an air conditioner that blows warm air is more than an annoyance. Before assuming a system needs gas, check the electrical side: the condenser fan, the compressor clutch, fuses, relays and pressure switches all fail with age and heat. A fan that doesn't start when the air conditioning is switched on is a common culprit. Any regassing or other refrigerant work needs a licensed technician.
