The Capricorn Coast in Livingstone Shire runs along Keppel Bay from Yeppoon south through Rosslyn and Emu Park. Salt air, boat trailers, holiday towing and cyclone-season weather shape the auto electrical work here.

Suburbs in Capricorn Coast

The Capricorn Coast is a string of seaside towns about 40 to 50 kilometres from Rockhampton, linked by the Scenic Highway. Yeppoon is the shire's main town and business centre, Rosslyn has the state boat harbour, and Emu Park is a smaller, quieter town to the south. Most vehicles here live close to salt water, many tow boats, and plenty make the daily run inland to Rockhampton. That combination means corrosion, trailer wiring and battery health come up far more often than in the city.

Common auto electrical jobs in Capricorn Coast

Living beside Keppel Bay is good for the soul and hard on vehicle electrics. These are the jobs that come up most along the coast.

Salt air corrosion

Onshore breezes carry salt well inland from the beaches at Yeppoon and Emu Park, and it settles on everything under the bonnet. Battery terminals grow crust, earth straps corrode where they meet the body, and unsealed plugs develop green pins. The result is slow starting, dim lights and faults that come and go. Regular cleaning and a protective coating slow it down. Our guide how to clean corroded battery terminals explains the safe method.

Boat trailer lighting

With boat ramps at Rosslyn Bay harbour, Emu Park, Coorooman Creek and Keppel Sands, boat trailers are everywhere on the coast. Dunking trailer lights in salt water is the fastest way to kill them. Sealed LED lamps, a heat-shrunk loom and a rinse with fresh water after each launch make lights last much longer. Many owners also unplug the trailer before backing down the ramp. Our guide why aren't my trailer lights working covers fault-finding.

Storm and cyclone season checks

Severe tropical cyclone Marcia crossed the Capricorn Coast in February 2015, bringing down trees and powerlines, and storm season returns every summer. Fallen branches damage cars, and wind-driven rain gets past tired seals into wiring and modules. After a big storm, check for water in footwells, boot spaces and lamps. Electrical faults caused by water can take days or weeks to appear, so don't ignore odd behaviour after wild weather.
